As you can see, we returned for the third year in a row to the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta in Tualatin, Oregon! However, this is only our second video to feature the same. We didn't make a video last year, focusing instead on flying our ghoul around the pond and getting still photographs to accompany an article in RotorDrone about this event. You can read that article in the September/October issue of the magazine, on newsstands now.
For those of you interested in the technical details, here they are: Our visible light camera ship for this video was a Yuneec Typhoon 4K, our FLIR Vue thermal imaging camera was carried on board a DJI Phantom 2 and stalwart RQCX-3 “Raven” made a return appearance to once again carry our ghoulish payload.
The pumpkin paddlers weren't the only people to compete this year. There was also a hands-free pie eating contest and Breaker – with a little prodding from yours truly – decided to participate. I've been wanting to get one of us up on stage since year one, thinking it would make a fun addition to the video.
However, while I was editing this project,it shifted away from being a documentary-style account of our adventure to a music video, and without providing some context, I didn't think watching Breaker wolf down pumpkin pie without the use of his hands would play especially well. So, Breaker, I thank you for your sacrifice and honor you for “volunteering” to take part.
If you'd like to know more about the festival itself, our video from two years ago covers it in some detail, including interviews with a pumpkin judge, a grower and a participant. Here is a link to that video:
Everybody have a safe and happy Halloween – and don't eat too much candy! You'll make yourself sick!
