Okay, so a while back something unexpected happened... We got an e-mail from industry colossus HobbyKing. I'm virtually certain everyone reading these words has not only heard of them, but it's more than likely you've purchased something from them at some point.
However, just in case you spent the
last several years living underground to test the psychological
effects of long-duration space flight, here's the 411: HobbyKing is a
Chinese supplier of basically every type and variety of RC vehicle
and system imaginable, on land, sea and air – more than 19,000
products in total. They are perhaps best known for the Turnigy brand
of LiPo batteries, as well as transmitters and receivers, servos,
power systems, motors, ESCs and, most likely, tea cozies at this
point.
They unashamedly occupy the “bargain” wavelength of the online retail spectrum, but that hasn't stopped them from producing useful and high-quality products. Techinstein bid himself all the way up to a “platinum” membership on the site purchasing pieces and parts for our various projects, and I picked up some Turnigy Nano-Tech batteries that I like a lot long before they ever reached out to us.
Anyway, reach out to us they did... They said that they had been watching our videos on YouTube for a while now, and they liked them because they were “quirky.” I'm not sure exactly what that means, but people seem to say it a lot.
Maybe it's because we're “quirky” or maybe they just looked at all the money we were spending and felt bad for us, but either way they made us an offer we couldn't refuse: they would send us anything in their inventory if we would make a video about it.
The kid-in-the-candy-store effect set in immediately, and now the space in my house that my wife refers to as “the drone room” in her more charitable moments is overflowing with boxes direct from China.
She wants us to clean it up and I'm sure HobbyKing is wondering whatever happened to all that hardware they shipped over to us, so we'll be getting those videos done and putting them on-line soon. Stay tuned...
